Behind the camera

Marina standing in a red-rock desert, camera raised to her eye

Marina Yurskaya came to photography by way of words — a master’s degree in journalism, years of telling stories. Then she moved to America, and the land left her wordless: red rock burning at sunset, black water holding autumn twice. The camera picked up where language gave out.

Now her year follows the land’s calendar — first snow on the hoodoos, Caddo Lake’s two loud weeks of autumn, dawn stilling the Teton lakes, last light on the Oregon coast. Thousands of miles for a handful of frames. Every photograph in the gallery is one of those meetings, and no light ever comes twice.
